Cultural Style
PDF | DOC

All Grade Levels

Study the traditional clothing of another culture and try to recreate it.  For young students, outfits can be made with long sheets of poster paper and crayons or markers.

Older students can decorate plain shirts, dresses, or sheets.  Home Economics students can create clothing from scratch.

Once finished, have a parade for the other classes.  If more than one class is participating, ask the leader of each class to carry a sign explaining which culture the clothes represent.

Question

1.  Are the clothes worn for utilitarian reasons or to represent the person’s social status?

*Older students using the batik method of decorating cloth need to be extremely careful not to spill the hot wax on their skin.  Oven mitts should be used to handle the melting pots and all students should wear heavy aprons.
