Wildflower Seed Ball Recipe

Seed Balls:

1 Part ( ¼ Cup):  Dry seed

3 Parts ( ¾ Cup):  Dry Compost

5 Parts (1 ¼ Cup):  Dry Red Clay, finely powdered and sifted

Directions on Making Seed Ball:

Mix ingredients DRY, turning and sifting to coat seeds with soil, then clay, then add:

1 to 2 Parts ( ¼ to ½ Cup):  Water added a little at a time until the clay mix is easily workable and of cookie dough consistency.  Roll into balls.

Size of Seed Ball:  Standard size of a seed ball for a wildflower mix is about one-half to three-quarters of an inch in diameter.  Seed balls that have very fine seeds should be about pea-size.  Seed balls that have large seeds like Bluebonnets might have a large seed ball up to 2 inches. The proportion and size of the seed balls is dependent on what kinds of seeds you use.

Allow to dry for 48 hours.  Cast in the fall from September 15 --November 15th.  Once they are dry, seed balls may be stored in a cool dry place or they may be broadcast immediately after drying.  The ground does not have to be prepared for the seed balls.  They can be broadcast over native prairie or existing grasses.  The seed balls are perfectly content to simply lay about “sleeping” until the right amount of rain falls to insure their success.
